Parenting a Child or Teenager with Mental Illness – Parent Coaching and Consulting Services
Is it time for you to be honest with yourself about how to really manage your life and thrive amidst the chaos you’re currently experiencing daily?
Let’s face it: as a parent of a child that struggles with mental illness, caring for yourself is as crucial as caring for your child.
Perhaps you identify with these thoughts and behaviors:
- Your exhaustion, isolation, confusion and crisis management have morphed into a “lifestyle”.
- You recognize that your care-taking behaviors that once felt like a contribution to your child and others is now leaving you flat-out exhausted.
- Attempting to be the parent your child needs for their safety, growth, coping and advocacy is overshadowed with feeling frenetic, empty and even stuck.
Sometimes well-intentioned behaviors become habits, creating a “new normal”: burnout, exhaustion, forgetting how to dream, joy and fulfillment lost in the efficient frenzy of moving through your life. You one day realize your parental role within your child’s mental illness journey hasn’t necessarily been consciously created and chosen by you, yet you can’t go on this way.
What will it take to awaken to the reality that this is YOUR spiritual path and you CAN move from surviving to thriving? For example, are your physical, mental and emotional body systems healthy? How about your closest relationships? Are you aligned with your life’s purpose and goals?
Your answers lie within. Quiet down. Listen to your intuition.
We can’t ever change what we don’t acknowledge. Ask yourself if it’s possible that co-dependency, overcompensating or simply trying to hold it all together have become everyday occurrences. Does it feel “normal” to justify putting your needs and desires last? You believe that your intention is of the highest good, yet your personal boundaries become gray or erase all together. Again – you lose. Don’t beat yourself up. Virtually all parents with children with any special needs focus on their child’s wellbeing first.
It can be different for you. Self-care is not selfish! It’s mandatory for thriving.
